No crop has influenced modern day Southeast Missouri like cotton. At the beginning of the 20th century when the swamps were being drained and timber cut down, a large area of fertile land because available for agriculture. At the same time the boll weevil had started taken over the cotton fields in the south. The only thing missing was the massive amounts of labors required to produce this crop. These two event created a massive migration of sharecroppers into the boothill from the south.
